I just started setting up my PHP City Portal and it has gone fairly smooth.
A few glitches with the hosting company that prevented the script from loading properly. Also, I am currently working on a problem with the headline link on the news page.
After discussion with PHPCityPortal tech support, it was determined that the hosting company needs to change the permissions on that domain.
I have JUST got the site live (with minimal content) and you can check it out at CheyennePortal.com (http://www.cheyenneportal.com)
I have a lot of experience with city portals, so most of the content entry and marketing is a breeze. But the behind the scenes coding, I need to work on. :)
I'd be happy to answer any questions about city portals if you need my assistance.

Been trying to fill it up with content, forum posts and users. working out the bugs slowly, had to reload it a few times to get it up and going, so we still dont have logos and ads back up! work in progress right? Look forward to seeing our sites grow!!!!

Is there a way to import or connect to directory listings? Kinda like yellowpages.com or something?
Also, what about parsing/importing newsfeed to keep that part current? RSS feeds...etc
I'm sure this is done places.

You can add new pages for that with the new version out. And yes, the news is rss feed set up through the admin.

You can download the demo from http://www.xshan.com/Store/Product/YPG.aspx and it's demo allows you to export it (yellowpage listings) into various formats contact information in blocks of 100. If you wanted directory of divorce attorneys you can put it in keywords and export it into format which can be imported into database file through cpanel.
Somewhere I have application for that saved.

I am in the process of setting up my site infowestvalley.com (http://infowestvalley.com) If you can look at it and tell me what can be wrong I can't even login into the admin area. Also where can I upgrade to the new Version 1.3.
Thanks

Your SQL database info you entered was not corrected. This works now. :)
You can upgrade at anytime. Simply log into your PHPCityPortal account and download the new software. If you need us to install it for you, we have a package of $29 for us to do this for you here: http://www.phpcityportal.com/order/browse_products.php
